Entry from DEAR JO: EXCERPTS FROM THE BIZARRE JOURNALS OF WALLACE DEAN PRICHARD 1954-1987
Mother is dead, Jo. For the last hour I’ve been wandering around the house in a daze; I thought writing might help me cope with my anguish, so here goes. I found Mom in her bed with an empty pill bottle at her side. I should have known she’d have more sedatives around. Clutched in her fist is a recent letter from Sonny. He wrote about how well he’d done in the stock market and how he’s looking forward to helping her do the same. I guess Sonny’s nervous reaction to my inquiries about his gambling, only proved to Mom, that he, and his letter lied. She went to bed with a broken heart and never got up again. Miracle on 34th Street is coming on right now, featuring a very young Natalie Wood. She is my all time favorite female star. I always thought the guy who played Santa had too short of a beard, otherwise, he’s a great St. Nick. I’m going to wait until this movie is over before calling for an ambulance. Mom is already in Heaven with Dad, so there’s no real hurry. I’ll tell the police I found her body at two p.m. instead of eleven p.m. Who has to know any different? And what difference would it make?
The Dixons were just getting home from Christmas Eve services last night when Sonny peeled out. I know they saw Mom losing it on the porch. I’m sure they heard her cry out, “I wish I was dead!” They’ll attest to her being upset, in case there’s any problem with the police believing what happened. And why shouldn’t they believe the truth?
